Cooking with the Safari Chef 2 low pressure BBQ

we will cover how to light the BBQ along with various cooking tips.

Catering

The Cadac Safari Chef 2 LP is small and therefore does limit the amount of people it can cater for. Typically the Cadac Safari Chef LP bbq can cater for 2-6 people. If you wish to cook for more people than you would simply have to cook the food in stages.

Some people love the Cadac Safari Chef 2 LP so much that they buy two Safari Chef BBQs and take them both on holiday in order to cook more food for more people. This of course is great if you have a caravan or motor home and have the storage compartments. If you too choose to buy two Safari’s then bear in mind you’ll need two lots of gas to power them both which will add extra weight.

Fat pan

If you are planning on using the Fat pan then now is the time to place it on the BBQ before lighting the BBQ as it help shelter the flame from the wind. Take note of the fat pan trench and the drilled out holes, as this is in fact a fantastic feature of the Safari Chef 2, as you will learn in our gamer changer of a tip for you, so please read on.

add water

Now this is going to be a game changer, especially when it comes to cleaning your fat pan! Add water, yes, that’s right, you need to pour some water into the fat pan.

At first, like many people, we thought that the trench in the fat pan was there to gather the dripping fat, and frankly that is not untrue. However, the real purpose of the trench is to hold water effectively creating a moat around the burner.

The drilled out holes in the fat pan are not there to release excess heat as we first thought; they are in fact drainage holes incase you add too much water! Of course, if you add to little water, the water will likely evaporate under the heat!

You only need to add water to the fat pan when using any cooking plate that contains a grid, as the fat will drip through the grid holes into the water. This will make cleaning the fat pan an absolute breeze later on! Trust us, it’s a game changer for sure! We will talk more about cleaning the fat pan in our cleaning section and we will compare the two different methods for you.

Oh, how did we learn this, well, not from the manual, that’s for sure, as it doesn’t mention anything about water in the fat pan. No, we learned this from a friend of a friend who spoke to someone at one of the various Cadac shows. This information was game changing for us and so we are proudly sharing this information to our audience and as you can see, we are not all knowing experts, we learn new things to and so we would love it if you joined our facebook community group so that we can all share amazing knowledge together.

light up the bBQ

Now that you have prepared your BBQ it is time to light up the Safari Chef 2 BBQ. Simply press in and turn the control knob 90 degrees anti-clockwise until you feel a slight click, and then you can release the control knob while you press the piezo ignition button; the BBQ should light within a few clicks of the button. Once the BBQ is lit, turn the heat control knob down to low, either 6 o’clock low or 5 o’clock full low.

You must not leave the Cadac Safari Chef 2 BBQ on high (9 o’clock) heat for more than 10 mins as this can and will damage the burner, causing the thread to melt! But don’t worry, as you don’t need the BBQ on full heat, it cooks very fast on low.

light up tips

A couple of tips for you, one, it helps to light up the BBQ with the wok/lid on compared to lighting with the the lid off as even the slightest breeze seems to make lighting the Safari chef 2 difficult. If, however, you cannot light the BBQ within 5 strikes, usually due to being exposed to the wind, then I would simply use a fire stick lighter to light the BBQ. Remember, as always, not to leave the BBQ on full heat, turn it down to low!
